Falling Asleep in Meditation: 5 Tips (Video )
Falling Asleep in Meditation
In this video, we explore why you fall asleep in meditation and what you can do to avoid it.
First of all, falling asleep is really common so don’t worry if it happens to you. It happened to me a lot at the start, but you do need to fix it because otherwise you’re just taking a daily nap!
So what mistakes are you making that lead you to fall asleep in meditation? Here are the main 5 and what you can do about them:
1) Lying Down
Avoid lying down in meditation. If you’re practicing a body scan or relaxation exercise to prepare, it’s ok, but in meditation you should be sitting upright with a straight spine, not resting or reclining in a chair. Learn more about meditation posture here.
2) Eating Before Meditation
Give it at least 2 hours after eating before you meditate. The body has to use a lot of energy digesting food, so meditating after a meal makes it impossible to still the mind and difficult to be alert. If you’re really hungry, just have a small snack beforehand. Read this article to learn more.
3) Meditating at the wrong time
If you meditate at the end of a long, hard day, you’re going to be tired, so meditation becomes difficult. Play around and see what works, but I recommend meditating in the morning. It’s the best time and you’re unlikely to fall asleep.
4) Thinking that relaxation and sleepiness are the same
Through our experience we have come to believe that when we’re relaxed, we get tired. But relaxation and sleepiness are not the same. In fact, we can be deeply relaxed yet alert. So try to understand that you can be relaxed, yet aware.
5) Having negative habits
Habits like drinking alcohol, drinking coffee, watching TV until late, lack of exercise, or eating unhealthily make you more tired. Try and make small changes to your life to improve your state of health. This will help you feel more aware and alert in meditation.
