Kundalini Awakening 101

“When you succeed in awakening the Kundalini, so that it starts to move out of its mere potentiality, you necessarily start a world which is totally different from our world. It is the world of eternity.” – Carl Jung

Kundalini energy is the dormant energy that lies at the base of the spine in the root chakra. In Hindu mythology, it is represented as a sleeping serpent. Through the serpent’s dreams of delusion, it makes us hungry, lustful, and attached to the material world. But when awakened, it rises up the spine leading to deep peace, lasting bliss, and spirituality.

A girl once came to Carl Jung and told him she had a black snake in her belly. He thought she was crazy at first, but after some research he said the following:

“This snake is well known in India. It is entirely unknown to us, but we have it too. She was not crazy but highly intuitive. The serpent is the basis of the whole philosophical system of tantrism: It is Kundalini, the Kundalini serpent. This is something known only to a few specialists.

During a Kundalini awakening, the energy travels up the spine, activating each chakra as it rises. At this point, there will be important changes in your life, and great progress on the spiritual path.

It takes time and dedicated spiritual practice for the Kundalini to fully awaken. But when it does, it clears away past karma and eventually brings lasting peace, joy, and wellbeing.

How safe is Kundalini Awakening?

There is some fear about Kundalini, especially in the Western world. People have reported unpleasant experiences, feelings of psychosis, and comparisons to bad trips. Others have reported feelings of depression and anxiety.

Now to be clear, this can happen, but only if you try to force the energy before you have prepared your body and mind properly with meditation. It will feel like pouring a million watts of energy into a 40-watt light bulb.

So, you should definitely be careful.

Never try to force Kundalini awakening. Make sure you have an experienced teacher to guide you and avoid doing it alone. Don’t try to awaken the energy through intense pranayama unless you are ready.

It’s better to let it happen spontaneously as a result of your growing dedication to meditation and spirituality.

Is it safe? Yes, but if you try to force it or if you try to do it without a teacher, it can lead to problems.

Tip #1: Meditate consistently

You need to have a daily meditation practice going if you want to experience Kundalini. Build a consistent meditation practice and avoid missing days. Learn how here. The longer and deeper you meditate, the more you will begin to awaken that energy. Make sure you’re sitting with a straight spine, as this is essential for the energy to rise.

Tip #2: Get a meditation teacher

It’s important to find a good meditation teacher or an awakened Master to give you the appropriate practices and techniques. Here is a guide on how to find a meditation teacher.

Tip#3: Practice Kundalini Yoga

This form of yoga helps you awaken that sleeping serpent at the base of the spine. It will improve your ability to cope with the energies as well. It’s better to practice under the guidance of a qualified Kundalini yoga teacher or at a class. Don’t try it yourself at home.

Tip#4: Consider Kriya Yoga

Kriya yoga works directly with the energy in the spine. You usually need to learn some preparatory techniques and receive Discipleship from your Guru before receiving this technique. It is a more advanced technique, but worth considering if you are serious about the spiritual path. You can learn the techniques to prepare you for kriya yoga here at Online with Ananda.

Tip#5: Experiment with Reiki

Reiki treatment also works with the energies in the body. A reiki healer will place their hands close to your body at the chakras and transfer energy. It can give feelings of deep peace. Reiki.org says it “feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you.” It can help you become aware of the energy in the body and start the process of controlling Kundalini.

Tip#6: Control Your Desires

It’s important that we practice moderation in all things and avoid indulgence where we can. The purer our bodies and minds, the easier it is to feel that energy. Eat light foods like vegetables and salads, and avoid heavy or low-energy foods. Read about a good meditation diet here. Avoid intoxicants and drink plenty of water. Fasting can be helpful if you struggle with overeating. Also be careful with what you read, what you watch, and what you say. Everything is energy, so try to control those aspects of your life that do not serve you.

Tip#7: Spend time with spiritual people

Spend time with advanced people who have experienced Kundalini awakening. This will help you to awaken those energies in yourself. You will find yourself progressing up to their level as you associate with them. The things that they talk about, their actions, and most of all, the energy that they share, will help you grow. Meditate with them, ask questions, and learn from them. Most of all be around them as much as you can. In India, spiritual friendship is known as satsang and you can read about it here.

Tip#8: Practice Devotion

Living a material and physical life keeps the serpent asleep. But when you begin to open yourself up to spirituality, the energy begins to awaken. Devotion is an important step on the spiritual journey. Here are a few things you can do to practice devotion in meditation and in your daily life:

  • Pray for Divine guidance and for inner peace
  • Feel the love expanding in your heart chakra as you meditate and pray
  • Chant devotional songs with love.
  • Attend a kirtan (a communal chanting meetup.)
  • Practice the presence of God – feel the Divine presence all around you as you go about your day
  • Love others and pray for them as you go about your day
  • Live with Divine joy and do what you can to eradicate melancholy moods.

Tip # 9 - Develop a positive mindset

Most of us spend a lot of time thinking negative, worried, or self-critical thoughts. These thoughts keep us trapped in ego-identification and materialism. This prevents the energy from waking up. Take steps to develop a positive mindset. This is not going to happen without effort. It requires practice. If you wait for it to happen, nothing will happen. Here are a few things you can do.

  • Affirmations – Affirming is a helpful tool for overcoming negative thoughts. Pick an affirmation or two and repeat them morning and night.
  • Reframing – Notice negative thoughts and “reframe” them. Mentally repeat the thought in a more positive way.
  • Visualize – Don’t worry about how your life will look in a few years. Visualize your perfect life and your dreams. Visualize peace, harmony, and joy.
  • Pray for others – This helps to take the focus off yourself and place it on others. Wish for other people to be well and you will find yourself being more loving, kind, and positive.

There are many more things you can do, but these are some of the most powerful techniques.

Tip # 10: Be patient

It can take time to experience a Kundalini awakening. My best advice is to actually not make it a goal at all. It will happen when you are ready. Focus sincerely on the spiritual path, develop your meditation practice, and let it go; the energy will rise naturally.

What happens during a Kundalini Awakening?

Now let’s take a look at what you might experience during a Kundalini awakening.

1. Energies in the body

Many people report feeling energetic sensations in their bodies. This can manifest as tingling, pressure, or hot and cold sensations in the spine. Some people feel their bodies swaying, becoming heavier, or a “twisting” sensation. You may also feel energy swirling in the forehead. This can all feel a little unusual, but it’s nothing to worry about and is very common.

2. Intuition and deeper wisdom

You may begin to understand things that you were not able to understand before. Deeper truths about the nature of life and reality are more easily comprehended. You may also experience intuitive feelings that you should follow a certain path. Decisions become more based on heart feelings than on rational considerations. You might feel the unexplainable desire to go somewhere or visit someone. Follow those insights when you can, because they will usually point you in the right direction.

3. Synchronicity

Things start falling into place in unusual ways. Carl Jung coined the term synchronicity. He defined it as “meaningful coincidences”. These events somehow seem to have a meaningful relationship to each other, in spite of having no “causal relationship.” So, you might start hearing and seeing guidance from the external world. You feel inside that there is some meaning to it, that it is a kind of Divine guidance: something on the television; a conversation that you hear on the train; the words on a person’s t-shirt or the lyrics of a song. It takes on a meaning that you would not have noticed before.

I know this will seem strange to some of you. But things are not exactly what they seem in the material world. On the spiritual path, you will discover many unusual truths.

4. Interest in spirituality

You might become more interested in spiritual ideas, practices, and traditions. The material world can begin to “lose its flavor” to a certain degree. We normally operate from the lower chakras – talking, sex, and sensory enjoyment. But as the energy reaches the higher chakras, we begin to function on a more spiritual level. Then our desire to continue raising our state of consciousness increases and so we go deeper into spirituality.

5. Bliss and impersonal love

You might feel waves of bliss in meditation or even in your daily life. I remember once I was walking to a friend’s house through a park, and I started feeling this sense of Divine joy. The world seemed so beautiful and perfect and everything in that moment began to make sense. It was an incredible experience. You may also feel a deep, impersonal love for others or for everything. At this point, you might be inspired to create something like poetry, art, or music.

6. Devotion

As the Kundalini rises, the joy and peace that you find often leads to a growing sense of devotion. We talked previously of devotion as a practice, but eventually it begins to develop spontaneously. Perhaps it is devotion to God or Guru, or even towards nature or the Universe. Devotion is an important part of the spiritual path and a wonderful feeling of love and respect that grows slowly over time.

7. Desire to Serve

You begin to feel more connected to others and to the world, like you are a part of everything. You begin to understand that selfless service makes life meaningful. The more you help others, the more you feel yourself healed and peaceful. Your goals become less focused around what you want to take for yourself, and more centered on what you can do to serve others.

8. Sense of Purpose

As the Kundalini rises up to the heart and throat chakras, you find incredible clarity of mind and purpose. You might find that you discover what you want to do with your life. For some, it can come as a kind of light bulb moment (as it did for me), while for others it comes after some trial and error.

9. Perception of other worlds

You may find that you begin to see light at the point between the eyebrows, or hear the sound of Aum in the inner ear, like rolling thunder. We start to perceive the subtler levels of reality beyond the physical realm. You might get glimpses of this as a beginner. But to experience it consistently, you will need techniques given to you by a Master and to practice those techniques with devotion.

10. Samadhi

As the Kundalini energy rises to the crown chakra, we enter a state known as Samadhi. This is the deepest state of meditation that happens to only the most advanced of yogis. It takes many lifetimes of spiritual practice to get to that point. When we experience Samadhi, the ego dissolves in the ocean of cosmic consciousness. At this point, as long as we don’t fall back into delusion, we will have made our way to enlightenment. And it is at that point that we will realize, that we were there all along.

Final Word on Kundalini Awakening

The beginning of the Kundalini awakening can mark the start of the spiritual journey for an individual in this lifetime. As the Kundalini reaches the crown chakra at the top of the head, the person goes into the deepest state of meditation known as Samadhi.

It is not something that happens overnight, but is the gradual rising of energy over many years and lives. It is important to be aware of this energy and to know how it works; we should also treat it with the respect that it deserves and avoid trying to force it to awaken before it is ready.
